The Clark County Highway Department is responsible for paving and repairing over 1000 miles of roads and most bridges throughout the county. This routinely involves removing debris, trees, or other obstructions in the county roadway while maintaining ditches, culverts and drainage structures. The Highway Department also builds and installs regulatory signs in alignment with the U.S. Department of Transportation MUTCD guidelines. Each year the County Engineer and Highway Superintendent use data collected on county roads to make important decisions about preserving and paving roads and bridges.
The Highway Department is responsible for snow removal from county roads. The Highway Superintendent and County Engineer keep a close watch on weather conditions and in collaboration with the Clark County Emergency Management Agency and other departments, make decisions based on the county’s best interest. During a snow event, the county will make major arteries our first priority, followed by secondary roads and then subdivisions.
The County Engineer, overseen by the County Commissioners, diligently looks for state and federal funding for multi-year projects. The County Engineer also oversees permitting and county funded projects. The Highway Superintendent heads all aspects of the Highway Garage. He works with vendors to ensure best pricing for highway equipment and supplies while leading the Highway Garage to use resources responsibly. The Highway Department works closely with other government agencies to ensure that the needs of county residents are met as quickly and efficiently as possible.
