Deadline Nears for First Families Applications

August 15 is the deadline to submit applications to the “First Families of Floyd, Clark, and Harrison Counties Legacy Project.” Applicants who verify direct descent from pioneers living in the tri-county area before 1841 will receive First Families certificates and pins and be special guests at the October “Celebration.” The project honors the spirit and legacy of the region’s early settlers, identifies their direct descendants, and preserves those families’ histories. First Families is an initiative of the Southern Indiana Genealogical Society (SIGS).

A First Families Workshop will be held Saturday, July 21 at 10 AM at the Harrison County Fred Griffin Genealogy Library. SIGS genealogists will explain the application process and strategies for researching early area settlers with emphasis on Harrison County. SIGS members will help with Floyd County First Families research by appointment in the Indiana Room of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library. Assistance with Clark County First Families research is available in the Indiana Room of the Jeffersonville Township Public Library.

The SIGS August 2 program will be “Stories of the First Families of Clark, Floyd and Harrison Counties.” The reasons early settlers came to the area, their routes of migration and modes of transportation used will be discussed. Pioneer biographies submitted by First Families Legacy Project applicants will be shared. A “meet and mingle” with light refreshments will start at 6:15 PM with program at 6:30 in the auditorium at the New Albany Public Library.

The annual “Hoosier History and Heritage Celebration” will be held October 4 at the Floyd County 4-H Fairgrounds Newlin Hall. A drop-in pioneer social will begin at 6 PM with music by Indian Creek Bluegrass Band and local history and First Families displays. Guests will include genealogists, historians, and reenactors. At 7 PM, First Families certificates will be awarded to the year’s honorees.
